A large permanent exhibition in the "House on the Border" documents the inhuman border regime of the GDR, daily life with the border and provides information about the sometimes successful but mostly unsuccessful attempts to escape to the West and the countermeasures taken by the GDR. The interactive exhibition project "Freedoms" documents the compulsory regime of the SED dictatorship using numerous objects, documents and photographs. A multivision show brings the dynamics and drama of the turning years 1989/90 up close and personal. On the "Path of Hope" along the former death strip, 14 sculptures based on the Way of the Cross symbolize the non-violent resistance against the communist dictatorships of Central and Eastern Europe.

The house on the border was built in order to be able to show a realistic and balanced representation of the conditions on the eastern side of the inner German border, which was understandable even for later generations. The two associations on the Hessian and Thuringian sides were successful in attracting public attention and Funded.

The new building erected in 2003 is located directly on the former column path. Developments and events related to the GDR border regime are illustrated here. In March 2014, after extensive renovation, the permanent exhibition "The GDR State Border in the Cold War" was opened, inviting young visitors in particular to deal with the topics of "Cold War" and "Life at and with the border". Important elements are the descriptive descriptions of the development of the border facilities and the examination of the experiences of contemporary witnesses.

Every European should go here. The Cold War was so present here, it always gives me goosebumps. Americans and GDR soldiers stood face to face. Remembering the inhumane border fence and the shooting order. Our young people are no longer familiar with an EU external border right through Germany. Reminds me of how cruel that was.
