Sanctuary of Montecastello

The pilgrimage church from the 17th century towers in a breathtaking position about 700 meters above Lake Garda.

Built on the ruins of an ancient temple, later converted into a castle, it houses the « Casa Santa », a small temple believed to date back to 800 AD. The richly frescoed interior (frescoes of the Giottesque school) houses, among other things, what was once the largest vow in Europe, dating from the early 16th century. The Sanctuary of Montecastello (Santuario Madonna della Stella) owes its name to the miraculous apparition of a « star » which put an end to a bloody battle at Tignale in 1200.

The view is worth the steep climb! Also interesting are the battle positions left over from the war.
