The exterior of a basilica is simple; worship takes place in a colonnade (nave, central nave), flanked by two side aisles and ending in an apse (semicircular altar niche). The central nave is taller and wider than the side aisles and is illuminated by upper windows above the aisles. Such basilicas originated in the 1st century AD. St. Stephen's Church is modeled on a medieval basilica.
