In addition to goldsmiths, pewter casters and shoemakers, the pottery trade in Preetz was of outstanding importance in the 17th and 18th centuries. Extensive sea and soil finds prove that Preetz played a major role as the manufacturing center of the so-called "Probsteier ceramics". The museum shows an impressive cross-section of this ceramic. At the beginning of the 17th century the craft of goldsmiths and silversmiths also flourished. The museum has outstanding examples especially of the masters of the 18th and 19th centuries. Another focus of the museum is the presentation of the history of the aristocratic monastery and the city of Preetz, regional archeology, including excavation finds of a women's burial ground from the 2nd to 4th centuries AD and relics of the Slavenburg Scharsdorf, as well as changing presentations of local handicrafts.

The former First Circus Museum in Germany was also located in this building, opened on October 15, 1974 and displayed a collection of pictures, posters, costumes, props and circus models on an area of 316 m². In 1990 the Association of Friends and Patrons of the Preetz Circus Museum was founded. Due to the lack of larger rooms for the growing holdings, the museum closed in 2010 and moved to Magdeburg.
