The preservation of the stone castle bridge by exclusively widening the roadway using a supporting slab was quickly rejected, on the one hand because of the lack of load-bearing capacity, but especially because of the severe impairment of its architectural effect. In 1956 it was decided to build a new bridge and the following year Prof. Dr.-Ing. Leohnardt, Stuttgart, in collaboration with the bridge architect Dip.-Ing. Lohmer, Cologne, was commissioned to design the new bridge.

The new castle bridge was to be designed as a prestressed concrete girder bridge with a total width of 24.20 m, 17.20 m of road and 3.50 m of sidewalk on both sides. The design for the bridge was already available in October 1957. The carriageway slab with projecting sidewalks stretched over two hollow girders
