The 7.5 kilometer long hiking trail leads from the center of the municipality of Bad Zwischenahn along the floodplain valley to the village of Specken. Through the Wiesengrund landscape park you return to the center via the small railway hiking trail.
We start at the town hall square in Bad Zwischenahn. From there you walk a bit through the town past the bathing park. You will soon reach the flood plain. After crossing the Auetunnel you get a view of a renatured oxbow lake and the Auewehr. The weir system was built in 1977 by the Ammerländer Wasseracht as part of the expansion of the floodplain and flood protection in the Leda-Jümme area. In the event of flooding, the water level in the Zwischenahner Meer can be raised by up to 60 cm (this corresponds to a water volume of approx. 3.3 million m³). Through the oxbow lake, which was renatured in 2007 and flows around the weir system, fish can once again reach the Zwischenahner Meer and its tributaries.
