The history of the Wildenrath Manor is closely linked to that of today's town. In 1118 the community was first mentioned in a document; since it already had a church back then, it is assumed today that it is much older and was founded in the 10th century. However, the manor house was built much later; today the time around 1318 is assumed to be the date of construction. The estate originally belonged to the Counts of Wassenberg, who had loaned it to the Lords of Wildenrath. The family lived here until 1500, then the owners changed several times until finally, in 1836, a branch of the Wassenberg family became the owner of the Wildenrath Manor. The manor Wildenrath today consists of a main castle and a bailey, which were originally separated by moats. Medieval parts of the building have not been preserved; it is assumed that today's estate dates from the first half of the 19th century. Because they wanted to preserve the property for the Schwalm-Nette Nature Park, which had just been founded, the city bought it in 1965 and opened a nature park here three years later. Since 2003 the Naturschutzbund Deutschland e. V. Leaseholder from the Wildenrath Manor. He set up a nature conservation station here.
