Góra Lotników is a sand dune with a height of over 110 m above sea level, in the east. from Józefów. On the slope of the Airman's Mountain there is a monument to three pilots from the 31st Squadron of the South African Air Force. They were shot down on the night of August 14/15, 1944. The Liberator plane was airdropping supplies for the insurgents in Warsaw, where it was damaged by German anti-aircraft artillery. The pilot directed the burning machine towards the Soviet positions and gave the order to abandon the plane. Five crew members rescued by parachutes. Three fallen pilots were buried next to the crashed plane, and after the war their bodies were moved to the British soldiers' cemetery in Rakowice, Krakow.
The monument was erected on the slopes of Góra Lotników in 1977, thanks to the initiative of Bolesław Kowalski (1905-95), a local social activist and former Home Army soldier. An erratic boulder with a stylized propeller rests on a conical concrete base. The whole thing is surrounded by a metal fence.
