Wettiner (late Middle Ages): dynasty that can be traced back to the 10th century and is therefore the oldest documented German aristocratic family after the Guelphs. The name is derived from the ancestral castle Wettin (City of Wettin, Saalekreis, Saxony-Anhalt). In the late Middle Ages they succeeded in continuously expanding their sovereign power, which enabled them to have hegemonic rule over all of Central Germany. With the acquisition of the Saxon electoral dignity in 1423, the Wettins rose to the circle of the highest imperial princes. Since the last third of the 15th century, the Wettins were able to establish themselves as one of the most powerful German princely families after the Habsburgs. The division of Leipzig in 1485 led to the continued division of the country and the formation of two Wettin lines.
