Over the years, many villages to the north of Antwerp had to make way for the growing port of Antwerp. Fort Lillo, a small village within the walls of an ancient fortress along the Scheldt, survived. Today it is a cozy place with narrow streets, pleasant cafes and lots of greenery.
Many day trippers find their way to Lillo in the summer months. Kids who once breathlessly followed Mega Mindy's adventures will recognize the superheroine's village. The large ships and port industry around the village give it a special cachet.
