Charcoal maker is a nearly extinct profession whose job it is to make charcoal from wood. The old forest trade is called charcoal burning. It was used until the 1930s. operated in the Boppard forest. The city, the forestry office and the Köhlerverein Boppard e.V. have been organizing the annual Köhlertage at Pentecost since 2007.
Characteristics of charcoal:
- one fifth of the weight compared to wood
- half the volume compared to wood
- largely tasteless and odorless
- Smoke-free burning without flame and spray
