The so-called Opernplatz on the corner of Bismarckstraße and Krumme Straße opposite the Deutsche Oper Berlin received its current name in 1987. The park has the character of a “private road for public transport”.

For the 750th anniversary of Berlin in 1987, the City of London gave Berlin the Shakespeare bust by Pam Taylor. Charlottenburg reciprocated, renamed the so-called Opernplatz to Shakespeare-Platz and placed the bust here. Charlottenburg has had a partnership with the London Borough of Lewisham since 1968.

Important composers later wrote operas based on many of Shakespeare's plays. Verdi alone created a whole series of highly successful Shakespearean operas. In this respect, this square directly opposite the Deutsche Oper certainly has an appropriate name.

Fun fact: The Arial, built in the early 1970s, had a small fountain in the middle of the square surrounded by a few park benches. This declined over the coming decades.
