The nature reserve is 688 hectares in size. It is the largest NSG in the area of the city of Bremen and the second largest in the state of Bremen. It protects a large-scale wet meadow landscape as a cultural landscape, which is often flooded in the winter months. The area is characterized by extensive grasslands with numerous ditches and small bodies of water. It is an important breeding area for meadow birds. Many migratory birds spend the winter here.
