From the upper end of this narrow gorge, you can see the Vajont Dam overhead. On October 9, 1963, a massive landslide slipped into the man-made reservoir created by the dam and raised a 800-foot wave that topped the dam. Longarone, the village opposite, was completely destroyed. Almost all of the approximately 2,000 inhabitants died, of which more than half were never found again.

If you look at the upper end of the narrow gorge over which this bridge leads, you can see the Vajont dam high up. On October 9, 1963, a massive landslide thundered into the reservoir and triggered a tidal wave that spilled over the dam wall into the valley. The town of Longarone opposite was completely destroyed. Almost all of the approximately 2,000 inhabitants died, about half of them were never found. What is particularly tragic about this catastrophe is that there were clear warnings when the dam was built. Longarone was later rebuilt (hence the somewhat oddly modern look). There is a large memorial in town.

The Vajont Dam in the Alps in northeastern Italy was built in 1956 to dam the Vajont River. It became known through the “Longarone disaster” on October 9, 1963.
