In Wittmoor you will find total peace and relaxation. There are easy-to-drive paths and real single trails for mountain bikers. It can get quite muddy after downpours.

The former high moor is a treasure trove for botanists or forest scientists, a documentation of the vegetation and forest history since the last ice age. Even for the layman, there is an impressive picture of the millennia-long history of the formation of this moor, which is a nature reserve in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein.

The Wittmoor Nature Reserve (Low German: Wittmoor = white moor) is located in the north of Hamburg in the districts of Duvenstedt and Lemsahl-Mellingstedt. The raised bog extends to GlashĂŒtte, a district of Norderstedt in Schleswig-Holstein. It was used for peat extraction until 1958 and has been designated a nature reserve since February 21, 1978.

A hiking trail leads through the renaturalized and dammed raised bog on the embankment of the old mine railway. Prehistoric plank dams crossed the Wittmoor.

The Wittmoor was formed by the excavation of a glacier tongue during the Weichselian Ice Age. Originally a lowland bog, it grew into a raised bog over the millennia. Peat extraction and the lowering of the groundwater level threatened the bog. In 1978, with the beginning of damming and the designation as a nature reserve, renaturation began:
The now widespread birch trees died, and the moorland began to develop again.

At least two boardwalks crossed the Wittmoor as prehistoric traffic routes in the swampy area. The older path dates back to around 330 AD,
and the second, located about 500 meters north, dates back to the 7th century.

Nowadays, the Wittmoor is easily crossed and circumnavigated by bicycle. Some sections are a bit bumpy, but the beautiful flora and fauna make up for this.
