Joined the Austrian army at the age of 18, following the usual military career, Lacy became Chief of Staff Wirich Philipp Dauns, 1765 Field Marshal and 1766 President of the Imperial War Council (in this capacity he reorganized the Austrian Army until 1773)

After 1780, Franz Moritz Graf Lacy had a "Rousseau tomb" built on his own property as a tomb, surrounded by a circular group of trees (an alternative to the Josephine ban on pompous burials in churches). In 1794, the classically designed burial place "Moritzruhe", intended for himself and his nephew Field Marshal Georg Graf Browne (* February 18, 1742 Moscow, † October 14, 1794 Vienna), enclosed by a spear fence, was erected (a simple tomb temple with four Tuscan columns at the entrance and a triangular pediment, with panels inside depicting military successes).
