In 1158, the town of Walegotsa was first mentioned in a donation document from Henry the Lion. This document assigned Walegotsa, today's Walksfelde, to the diocese of Ratzeburg as an endowment. In 1648, the 30 Years' War was ended with the Peace of Westphalia and the separation of church and state was sealed. The diocese of Ratzeburg became the principality of Ratzeburg and was assigned to the Mecklenburg sphere of influence. In 1701, the Hamburg settlement ended long-standing inheritance disputes in the House of Mecklenburg, with the result that the Duchy of Mecklenburg was divided into the duchies of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The principality of Ratzeburg and thus also Walksfelde belonged to Mecklenburg-Strelitz.The development of the place name
