The original complex of the moated castle was built in 1440 by Balthasar von Wenkheim. With the purchase of Wilhelm von Bibra in 1513, the castle and the associated domain came into the possession of the von Bibra family. After being destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was rebuilt by Hans von Bibra. Significant parts, such as the stair towers with a transition between the south and north chambers, the gates, and the farmyard with the manager's house, barns and stables were rebuilt between 1570 and 1600 by Heinrich von Bibra. In the south there was a drawbridge over the moat, which has now been restored as a permanent bridge. Parts of the palace complex were destroyed in World War II and the buildings are in varying degrees of condition. The extension was converted into three residential units and rented out.
