In the Penzliner Land there was a border fortification called the Iron Gate (Isern Purt) between the Slavs and the German settlers in the 12th century. German settlement took place around 1220 and the castle was probably built, which subsequently became the second residence of the Werle princes. From 1501 the castle was the ancestral home of the von Maltzahn family.
