Claiming the title of Scotland’s most easterly mountain, hikes to Mount Battock take you to a unique, high vantage point for gazing across the incredible landscape of the Mounth, of which it is the final great upthrust. It is a lovely rounded Corbett, in a wild, untamed corner of the Scottish Highlands.
Most walking routes to Mount Battock begin from Glen Esk to the south and ascend good paths onto the rolling, peaty moorland that characterises the region. Alternative routes from the east take you past the awesome granite tor that crowns nearby Clachnaben.
A trig point and dry-stone shelter adorn the summit, which boasts tremendous views of whalebacked Mount Keen and the east facing crags of Craig Maskeldie above Glenlee.
Accommodation can be sought in the towns and villages that line the scenic River Dee to the north, or around the villagers of Edzell and Fettercairn to the south east. Tarfside is the nearest village, though options here are more limited. By the old military road into Deeside is House of Charr, a charming bothy to the east of the mountain.
Its height and gentle slopes mean that it is incredibly rare that an ice axe and crampons would be required in winter conditions.
