Amongst the wild tangle of upland between Loch Eil and Loch Arkaig is a mountain that veils its considerable charm from all but those intrepid souls who venture out to make a closer acquaintance. It is a mountain worth getting to know; hikes to Gulvain are magnificent.
Gulvain, or Gaor Bheinn in the original Gaelic, is a remote mountain that is complicated to reach; you’ll need an adventurous spirit to attain the summit. Walking routes to Gulvain typically begin at the western end of Loch Eil, easily accessed by the A830. Some use a mountain bike on the approach. Other routes from Loch Arkaig’s eastern end are also possible.
Once up high, an entertaining ridge is tackled between its two principal summits before you reach a large cairn that marks the very top. The view towards distant Ben Nevis is particularly fine, whilst the rough bounds of Knoydart stir the soul to the north west.
Fort William is well within driving distance and has all the gear shops, eateries and accommodation you can shake an ice axe at.
In winter conditions the mountain is best left to experienced and equipped mountaineers.
Gulvain is a 987m Munro mountain in the Scottish Highlands. We approached it from Loch Eil in the south. I don't believe there are many options to turn this walk into a circular, but luckily the views are good enough to enjoy returning via the route of ascent.
