Efforts to build a new church began in the 1890s because the old castle chapel had become too small. The Maria Bauverein was founded in 1895 by the then Vicar Friedrich Josef Pütz for financing. After sufficient funds had been collected, today's parish church of St. Martinus could be built in the neo-Romanesque style between 1902 and 1903 according to plans by the diocesan architect Franz Statz from Cologne. The foundation stone was laid on June 22, 1902 by Cologne Auxiliary Bishop Antonius Fischer.

St. Martin's Church is located in the southwestern part of Düren. It was built in the neo-Romanesque style at the beginning of the 20th century. The parish belongs to the St. Elisabeth congregation.

Birgel was always a branch of the Lendersdorf parish. In the 17th century, the castle chapel was built next to Birgel Castle, which later received a vicar. These priests also took care of pastoral care in Birgel, but they were subordinate to the Lendersdorf pastor. It is possible that there was already a church building in Birgel before then. As the church was being rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century, the desire for parish independence grew. With effect from March 1, 1905, Birgel was finally separated from Lendersdorf and became an independent parish.
