The tower was built in the middle of the 14th century and served as a defensive tower and as a base. Here the Krattenturm was built on a small, artificial hill. The superstructure, made of wooden beams, was on a round plinth, from which one could see the city of Lindenhof. The name comes from a resin-filled basket (Kratten), which was attached to the top of the tower and was lit when an enemy approached to warn the city with a smoke signal.
The first mention of passed "fire tests" of the Letzi and the Krattenturm can be found as early as 1353, when the Dukes of Austria tried to siege the city unsuccessfully three times within a very short time. On April 30, 1444, the Letzi was used again when the Confederates devastated the area and besieged the city in the Old Zurich War. Another attack occurred at the Krattenturm, but this time it was completely destroyed.
