A landing of the zeppelin in 1909 was never planned there. The monument commemorates the emergency landing of the "Reichsluftschiff Z1" on April 1st, 1909. The airship was on a long-distance journey to Munich. Landing was not possible there due to poor weather conditions. An unsuccessful attempt to land in the Landshut area (Münchnerau) was also made. The emergency landing of the “giant cigar” had caused an uproar at the time. The monument was restored to mark the 100th anniversary of the landing.
Another memorial about the emergency landing of a zeppelin is located in Fischreute near Kißlegg in the Allgäu. There a zeppelin had to make an emergency landing in a storm on January 17, 1906 (bicycle highlight “Zeppelin memorial”).
