What happened?
On September 17, 1944, five American soldiers were killed in a plane crash over Linden. Their aircraft was ordered to drop paratroopers in the Groesbeek area during Operation Market Garden. Under heavy anti-aircraft fire they managed to drop the entire stick except for one parachutist. Badly hit, the aircraft turned away from this anti-aircraft fire and eventually crashed into the field of Piet Martens in Linden. The entire crew of the aircraft and the unfortunate parachutist were killed. They made the supreme sacrifice for our freedom. The fallen Americans are therefore commemorated annually in Linden.
