The former Premonstratensian monastery was founded in 1147 by Welf VI, Margrave of Tuscia. Numerous restorations and reconstruction measures are reflected in the different styles of the building. The inner portal, the west wing of the cloister, the fountain chapel and the St. John's Chapel have been preserved from the time of its foundation. The Welfenmünster in Steingaden is now one of the most popular and most popular sights in the Pfaffenwinkel. Guided tours can be booked through the Steingaden Tourist Information Office.

The church has been beautifully renovated (2019)! The abundance of Rococo does not seem over-burdened, however.
It was a surprise to find the gravestone inscription for Karlfried Graf Dürckheim, who, together with Maria Hippius, built up the existentialist-psychological meeting place in Todtmoos-Rütte and ran it for a long time. I was even able to meet him in person!
