The unusual name of this formerly independent community probably goes back to the old name "Eilf-Fohren", which means "eleven furrows" and refers to the former division of the country. Nature may also have contributed to the name, because when wafts of fog rise here in the valley in the early morning hours, they resemble a group of dancing elves.

Interestingly, this village belongs to Hemer rather than Neuenrade, as it's closer to the latter.

Elfenfohren has been part of the formerly independent municipality of Ihmert since January 1, 1975, a district of the city of Hemer. The settlement is located in the southwest of the city, just before the Evingsen border. The courtyard and attached restaurant date back to 1813. The origin of the name has not been finally clarified. According to an interpretation from 1885, the old name "Eilf-Fohren" stands for eleven furrows into which the country was divided. Alternatively, wafts of mist over the valley could be seen as a group of hovering elves. 👸🏽
