Stave churches (mast churches) are churches made of wood that can only be found in Scandinavia - and in the Harz Mountains. The Gustav Adolf stave church in Hahnenklee is a free replica of the Borgund stave church, very well preserved and definitely worth a visit. You can find the opening times at: stabkirche.de.

There is also a second stave church in the Harz Mountains, the stave church in Stiege. However, it stands abandoned in a small Harz forest and is now being relocated and brought to the place due to break-ins and destruction.

A beautiful stave church. An absolute must on the Liebesbankweg.

Hahnenklee is worth a trip for its stave church alone. The stave church is located along the Liebesbankweg, which is approx. 7 km long. If you pick up a stamp card from the tourist information office in advance of the hike, you can get a total of three stamps on the Liebesbankweg. If you then present the completed stamp card at the tourist information office, you will receive a certificate for the hike on the Liebesbankweg with the date, signature and stamp. The path is also worthwhile for the stamp hunters of the Harz hiking pin, as the stamp 112 is also on this path.So I can only recommend it!

From a distance you can not shake the feeling, it is at the church to a miniature replica, or a small church. Only when you stand in front of it you realize the true size!
The wooden church looks very well maintained.
Also good to see from the Kranichteichen down in the village Hahnenklee!

The church was built between 1907 and 1908 in ten months. The model was the much older stave churches in Norway. Prof. Karl Mohrmann, consistorial architect of the Hanover regional church, oriented himself towards the Nordic churches, but adapted the size and design of the design to the needs of the community. The Hahnenkleer stave church with its 240 seats is larger than its Norwegian counterparts and the relatively large windows let a lot of light into the interior. The local craftsmen used spruce wood from the area as building material, which also made the construction more cost-effective than the originally planned neo-Gothic brick building. The architectural style is reminiscent of shipbuilding in many elements, also somewhat of Viking ships with the numerous dragons on the roof and in the decorations. The chandelier is modeled on a ship's steering wheel.

Directly on the Liebesbank circular walk of 7 km long with lovingly designed benches, relaxation areas, adventure opportunities and fantastic views.
It can be made on three different stamps imprints on the Liebesbank stamp card to then receive a personal certificate with name and date.

Beautiful stave church, which is regularly lovingly repaired. There is a clarillon in the tower. There are regular concerts for free.

Stave churches (made of wood) are usually only found in Scandinavia. Therefore this is a rarity in Germany and a small highlight in the Harz Mountains.

Beautiful very rewarding wooden church. Exceptional style for the resin. A donation of one euro will be asked at the entrance. Serves the preservation of the church.

Every Saturday at 3 pm the Carillion (Glockenspiel) is played. Sit outside on the lawn or benches and listen.

A church in the Nordic style as the name implies.
Made entirely of resin spruce. Impressive carvings inside and out. Instead of colored walls and pictures.

The stave church of Borgund, Norway served as a template for this beautiful Protestant church in Hahnenklee. Made entirely of wood inside and out, a little reminiscent of a Viking ship

Very interesting and really beautiful wooden church in a style not quite typical for the Harz. For a donation of 1 Euro to receive the church, this can be viewed from the inside. I can only recommend this to you.

As of 01.10.2017, not much of the stave church in Hahnenklee can be seen from the outside, as it is completely scaffolded.

Not only the woodwork, but also the lead-glazed windows with Nordic runic signs are worth seeing.
