Altencelle was once the original town of Celle (town charter since 1249). The place was mentioned in a document in 986 as "Kellu" (settlement on the river). At that time there was a castle complex. In 1290 the castle in Altencelle burned down.
The Gertrudenkirche is one of the oldest church buildings in Celle. It was mainly built in the 14th century. One of the most important cultural monuments from the early Middle Ages is the Burg wall.

The Gertrudenkirche in Altencelle is the oldest surviving evidence of the old Celle. Here a display board provides information about the past, because the church no longer presents itself in its historical form, as archaeological research has shown. According to the findings, the church, which was first mentioned in 1326, was probably built around the year 1000. Inside, it is primarily the old baptismal font and the carved altar that represent the age of the church. A visit is possible by arrangement with the parish office. During excavations in Altencelle, among other things, a gold-plated harness pendant in the shape of a scallop from the 13th century was found. The stamp is deposited in a box at the church.

The Gertrudenkirche in Altencelle is one of the oldest church buildings in the Celle area. Its construction history can be traced back to before 1000 AD. The current building structure dates back to a reconstruction phase in the 14th century. It was only mentioned as “Gertrudenkirche” in 1507. The baptismal font dates from the 13th century. The altar from 1509 is a work of late Gothic carving by an unknown master and shows the four evangelists.
