The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh. It was originally built to transport coal from mines in Worsley to Manchester. Now it is forms part of the 40 mile (64 km) Bridgewater Way, a scheme to redevelop the canal, especially for cyclists.
