Around 1870 the city of Magdeburg decided to set up a park on Werderinsel. To this end, she acquired six hectares of meadowland in the south of the island from a merchant. Magdeburg's garden director Paul Viktor Niemeyer was commissioned to design the park. From 1871 to 1874 promenade paths were created and trees and bushes planted. From 1898, the park was expanded by the previously unused areas in the south and east of the island to its current size under the direction of Gottlieb Schoch, Niemeyer's successor. Schoch created a spacious and spacious park landscape emphasizing the floodplain character of the area.

In 1908 the pigeon Elbe, an old river course, was expanded to a lake, which was named "Adolf-Mittag-See" after the project financier, the Magdeburg merchant Adolf Mittag. Also at midday, a “temple” was built on the Marieninsel in the lake. With the involvement of the unemployed, an avenue with four-row linden trees was planted in the southern part of the park after 1918, which today bears the name Heinrich-Heine-Weg. At the same time, Fort XII, once part of the city fortifications, was converted into a natural theater. Wikipedia

A new attraction emerges, a ferris wheel in Magdeburg. When it starts is still in the stars. 😉😀

Many paths lead through the park to the southern tip. The new Elb Hotel invites you to eat and drink.
