This monastery is dedicated to the Blessed Mother, as is the majority of the Cretan monasteries. It is actually such an old nunnery, since it is mentioned in documents from 1333, which is known for the miraculous icon of the Mother of God Kardiotissa. The original architecture of the monastery was assigned to the type of fortress. At the beginning, the catholic of the monastery was a hall church with a covered arcade, which was later added with two Narthizes and a small chapel. All of the murals date from the 14th century, except for the murals on the north side of the church, which date from the 15th century and have features of the icon painting of the Macedonian School. The monastery is linked to a legend and that is why it has become a center of attraction for many believers. According to tradition, the icon of Panagia Kardiotissa - the miraculous icon and from which the monastery got its name - was stolen three times by the Turks and three times it returned on its own. The third time, according to legend, they tied the Turks with chains to a marble column, which the icon also took with them. This column from the legend is now in the courtyard of the monastery and the chain is next to the icon.

The Greek Orthodox Church Panagía Kerá (Greek Παναγία Κερά, dt. "Holy Lady") is located near Kritsa on Crete (Greece) not far from the Lasithi plateau. Also sometimes called Panagía i Kerá or Panhagia Kera, this church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.[1] The church dates from the 13th century and houses well-preserved and restored Byzantine frescoes. It is a three-nave domed church. The two vaulted side aisles represent later additions to the original church. There are other churches that bear this name.

The monastery also houses a museum with artistic paintings, pieces of jewelery up to episcopal hangings and other items of equipment - quite impressive!

Entry to the entire facility costs 2 euros for tourists. Visitors with short skirts or trousers can borrow a cloth to tie around (as a skirt), as knee-length clothing is not permitted.
