A real DAV hut of the Essen section in the Sauerland. The descent / ascent via the donkey path is highly recommended.

Finally a refreshment stop in the middle of the Sauerland, as I said almost like in the Allgäu 👍

The Alpenhaus was built in 1934 by the DAV Essen section. The opening times are Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. From 6 p.m. by appointment. There is also the possibility of staying overnight in the hut for up to 34 people. Further information can be found at alpenhaus.de.

If you want to go on a hike there, it makes sense to observe the opening times.

If you want to leave the Alpenhaus early, unfortunately it's unfortunate. There is no breakfast before 9am. The innkeeper likes to sleep a bit longer and 9 o'clock is way too early. :-). The menu is not extensive, but sufficient for 1/2 nights. Food is good and plentiful.

Clocky "pub", unfortunately we had no nice view due to fog. Moderate prices.

Great location and huge view from the terrace. Rustic cuisine with fair prices. Spending the night in the rustic rooms is an experience. Hopefully the owner Frank will survive the corona crisis! I wish you all the best!

Even during Corona times there is hot soup and hot and cold drinks through the window on weekends.
We found the pea soup very tasty and were very happy to have something to warm up in the cold weather

Unfortunately not very nice places outside and there is no view either! But with the year of construction 1934 you shouldn't expect something like that! 😉

Great, rustic accommodation and solid cuisine. It seems that Claudia has not yet understood that you shouldn't make a duplicate of every highlight.

The Oberhundemer donkey path and the Oberhundemer mountain tour are very worthwhile and varied hiking trails.
Promising and with the Alpenhaus also a very nice resting place in a great location.

That probably showed hut north of the Alps. Here you can enjoy the peace and quiet - far away from stress and everyday life. If you want to switch off and explore the area on various hiking trails, this is the right place for you.The foundation stone was laid on July 1, 1934 and the topping-out ceremony was held on September 30, and the inauguration ceremony took place at the turn of 1934/35. After it turned out that continuous cultivation was necessary, an extension with living and sleeping rooms for the cultivator was built in the following year.

The donkey trail begins shortly before the Alpenhaus. The name comes from the period from 1948 to 1956 there, the hut was managed by Christel and Siegfried Federle, whose transport donkey is still well remembered by many older residents. The shortest way from Oberhundem to the Alpenhaus is still popularly known as the donkey path.

The Alpenhaus, now privately owned, was even open to people away from home during the restrictions. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are closed, on the other days it is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Here you can pick up a stamp for the Rothaarsteig Spur Oberhundemer mountain tour.
