De Weelen is a nature reserve in West Friesland in the Dutch province of North Holland.
The 350-hectare nature reserve is located between Andijk and Enkhuizen in the Grootslag polder on either side of the Kadijk, a transverse dyke that was built here in the Middle Ages. The area got its name from the so-called weelen (also called wheels or walen). These are gullies that remained in the landscape after the breaking of the Kadijk. From west to east are in the area the Klookeweel, the Ruiterweel, the Lutjebroekerweel and the Zuidmeerweel.
The area lies within the municipalities of Medemblik and Stede Broec. In the nature management plan of the province of North Holland, the area - as well as the nearby Streekbos - is typified as follows: "Complex of watercourses, dike breaches and polders that have been spared in land consolidation. Combination of open water, reed and roughness, spontaneous and planted forest and moist and herbaceous grassland ". (Wikipedia)
