Some ramparts and ditches can be seen from the Wahlsburg itself. The castle gave its name to the municipality of Wahlsburg, which existed from 1971 to 2019 and consisted of the towns of Lippoldsberg and Vernawahlshausen.

The Wahlsburg is a former early medieval fortification above the Schwülmetal between Lippoldsberg and Vernawahlshausen, of which only remnants of ramparts and moats can be found in the forest today. It was apparently built to secure the Frankish rule in the Upper Weser area in the 8th or 9th century.
