The first documented mention of a Parrochianus de Condiz (pastor of Kunitz) was in 1239. In 1450 the Gleisburg chapel was transferred to the Kunitz parish. In 1491, Bishop Dietrich I of Naumburg confirmed in writing that there was a church in Kunitz. The current nave was built around 1773 (inscription above the portal on the south facade) in place of a previous medieval building that was destroyed by fire in 1764 as a baroque Protestant hall church with two galleries. The tower was supplemented with a pointed hood based on a design by Carl Spittel in 1860, and at the same time the pulpit altar, which is now in the transition to the tower, was renewed. The baroque pulpit that was dismantled is preserved as a fragment.

Church services take place regularly in the Martinskirche. Also musical vespers and concerts.

The Martinskirche is surrounded by a cemetery with a massive wall made of broken and house stones. Two preserved and at the beginning of the 2010s restored or partially renewed tombstones commemorate local priests and their families in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
