Penkun Castle is one of the few old Pomeranian castles still standing. The construction of the castle is reported in 1198. The castle was owned by the Pomeranian dukes until 1478. In 1479, Captain Werner von der Schulenburg was given to Penkun Castle by Borgislaw X. Duke of Pomerania. Schulenburg built the three-wing, three-story castle with two watchtowers. On April 2, 1614, Henning von der Osten, Hauptmann zu Stolpe and Verchen, bought the castle Penkun with ten surrounding towns from Joachim von der Schulenburg. The castle has about 44 rooms, 190 windows, the area of the castle is about 1720 square meters. In the last few years before the fall of the Berlin Wall, the castle was dilapidated and left to decay. Dedicated citizens of Penkun tried to maintain the castle. The castle has been renovated since 1991. The castle belongs to the city of Penkun and is for sale.

On May 18, 2008, a museum was opened in the former administrator's house, which belongs to the palace complex. It is operated by a museum association that has existed since 1996. Today's Penkun Castle was first mentioned as a castle around 1190 and was expanded as a border castle by the Pomeranian dukes in the 13th century. The castle was built from 1484 to 1486 with the inclusion of this previous building.
