The Pantheon in Stourhead was built between 1753–1754 to designs by architect Henry Flitcroft. It is inspired by the famous Pantheon, but is smaller and adapted to the English landscape garden.
The building forms the most important focal point on the west bank of the lake. From the opposite side – especially from the grotto – it appears as a monumental temple and is deliberately placed to attract visitors' attention. The circular path through the garden is designed as a symbolic journey, reminiscent of the wanderings of Aeneas from Roman mythology.
