In 1941, the water tower and its outbuilding, the pump house, were built in Lichtenfels. Its original purpose was solely to supply water to steam locomotives.
Due to its solid construction with small-format clinker bricks, the building withstood the decades and even survived air raids during World War II relatively unscathed.
The water tower served its purpose reliably until the German Federal Railways stopped steam-powered railways in the early 1970s.
After being used for other purposes, including as a climbing tower, the entire building was cleared and is currently vacant.
