Great Crested Grebe at Herlingsweiher

The great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) is a species of bird from the family of the grebe (Podicipedidae). The mallard-sized bird is the largest, most common and best-known representative of this family of waterfowl. It breeds on freshwater lakes and larger ponds with reed-covered banks. Its courtship behavior, which takes place in the open water and is easy to observe, is particularly striking. The courtship elements include a violent shaking of the head with a spread bonnet as well as the so-called penguin pose, in which the birds lift themselves almost vertically out of the water by quickly paddling their feet.

The great crested grebe was bird of the year 2001 in Germany and Austria.
