The facility was established in 1895 for the Württemberg Army (many horse stables). Later used by the Wehrmacht to practice the winter war. 1944 site of the Vlasov Army. Used by the French occupation forces until 1992. Today a visitor center of the biosphere reserve is located there. There is a small café (it is essential to inquire about opening times in advance). There is a good eatery opposite the main entrance.
