The large Datteln lock was built in 1928 and opened in 1931 together with the canal. The lock chamber is 222 m long, 12 m wide, the drop is 7.5 m and the water consumption per lock is 20,000 m³. Ships with a draft of up to 2.8 m can be locked. This lock is closed by lifting gates on the upper and lower water sides. These lock gates were renewed in November 1993.

The eastern entrance gate to the Wesel-Datteln Canal is located directly on the Datteln Lake and is marked by the Datteln-Natrop lock group. As one of a total of six lock systems, it was opened together with the canal in 1931. It has a small lock with a usable length of 110 meters and a large lock with a length of 222 meters. Both locks are 12 meters wide. The large lock was built in 1929 and is therefore older than the small lock built in 1970.
