Best Mountain Biking Routes to Pietzmoor

Tips

  • The Pietzmoor is located on the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath nature reserve and today still covers an area of around 2.5 km². The formation of the raised bog was facilitated by the hollow location and by water-impermeable clay layers in the subsoil. Profile investigations carried out in 1975 showed that the maximum peat thickness is 7.50 meters. If one assumes an annual growth of the peat-forming sphagnum (peat mosses) of around 1 millimeter, then the age of the Pietzmoor is almost 8,000 years. The Pietzmoor has experienced a rather atypical development. It did not, like most other bogs, emerge from a nutrient-rich lake that turned into a flat bog and developed over time into a raised bog. Instead, after the Ice Age, cotton grass, sedge and peat moss species settled here very early in a water-rich hollow and continued to grow over it. This formation of the raised bog is characteristic of many heath moors, with the acidic, silicate subsoil playing a decisive role. Centuries of use almost meant the end for this gem. Thanks to successful renaturation, the Pietzmoor can now grow again and will remain as a "history book of nature". schneverdingen-touristik.de/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-7138/12845_read-51078

  • The Pietzmoor
The moor rests in magical darkness...
    shrouded in fog...
    timeless...
It is eight thousand years old and yet always attractive: The Pietzmoor lures with its bizarre landscape and mysterious atmosphere.
The planked walkways in the Pietzmoor are not barrier-free. They are a maximum of 1.0 to 1.2 meters wide and uneven. The circular path is almost 5 km long. Cycling is not permitted on the planked walkways, or you are asked to dismount and push. Firstly because the walkways are too narrow and then also for liability reasons. If the walkway is dry and there are no pedestrians around, you can also - at your own risk, of course - ride slowly and considerately on the planked path and dismount/push when there are pedestrians nearby. schneverdingen-touristik.de/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-7138/12845_read-51078

  • It is a landscape that exudes calm. Uniquely idyllic.
