The Kirchderner Graben in Dortmund, once known as “Köttelbecke” and part of the former dirty water course, has undergone extensive renaturation. This is part of a larger project that includes the reconstruction and ecological improvement of the upper reaches of the Körne in Dortmund's northeast, including the Rüschebrinkgraben and the Körne upper reaches. The project, carried out by the Lippeverband, included the construction of closed sewers and the ecological transformation of these bodies of water.

The renaturation not only eliminated the sewage odors, but also converted the concrete streams into natural, meandering watercourses. The bed shells were removed and the riverbed was raised to create a wider and flatter stream bed. The Kirchderner Graben and its tributaries such as the Erlenbach, the Böckelbach and the Borlandgraben were redesigned so that they regained a natural character.

The conversion of the Kirchderner Graben, as the most important tributary of the Körne, was a challenge due to the limited space in urban areas. However, the Lippeverband has acquired land in order to enable more demanding renaturation in some places. One result of these efforts is the creation of a cycle path along a section of the Graben, which increases the residential and leisure value of the neighboring districts.

These extensive measures, which represent an important step towards improving water quality and restoring natural watercourses in Dortmund, were financed with a total investment volume of 12.6 million euros for the Kirchderner Graben. The project is part of a long-term vision to ecologically improve urban waterways and provide citizens with more accessible and natural recreational areas.
