The power station was built in 1921 by the Munich engineer dr. Eugen Sapper built. The water of the Eger is derived three kilometers above the work at Leupoldshammer, flows into a channel and then crashes in two iron pipes 30 meters down to four turbines.

The canal for the Hirschsprung power station begins shortly after the Leupoldshammer power station. At a distance of four kilometers, the water gains a height difference of 30 meters to the Eger.
