The Volksdorfer Teichwiesen are one of the last well-preserved "tunnel valleys" in Hamburg, which was created by melt waters flowing under the ice in the immediate vicinity of the ice edge. In contrast to many other tunnel valleys, e.g. the Stellmoorer Tunneltal, the Volksdorfer Tunneltal is extremely short and therefore represents a geological peculiarity. Today the Volksdorfer Teichwiesen only appear as a gentle valley basin, as the originally much deeper hollow form has been filled with over 14 m of soil layers.
These geological peculiarities have led to the development of a location that is also particularly attractive for the flora. In June, those interested in nature are rewarded with the sight of thousands of blooming orchids.hamburg.de/volksdorfer-teichwiesen
