The impressive Lauenburg castle tower was part of a fortress that Bernhard von Askanien had built in 1182. Its former function as a turret is evident on the lowest floor, with walls two meters thick and loopholes. Later this was used as a prison, the cells are still recognizable today. Inside, two wooden stairs lead up to the bell tower. An ascent is definitely worthwhile, because you have a great view from up there.

The oldest part of the castle that can still be seen today is the mighty defensive tower opposite the current official building. It is really impressive and worth seeing. A clear recommendation.
The tower was completed in 1477 after twenty years of construction. Equipped with walls two meters thick, various loopholes and a powder chamber, the surrounding area could be checked from here. After the castle was destroyed in the 17th century, the top floor had to be removed and was replaced by the baroque roof rider that can still be seen today. Nevertheless, you can still look far into Lower Saxony from the top of the castle tower. There are prison cells on the first floor of the castle tower, which are still originally furnished. In the former powder chamber in the basement there is now a lapidarium (collection of stone works). The defense tower is open to interested visitors and can be visited free of charge.

The castle tower is the symbol of Lauenburg. Not far from there is the Askanierblick
