Around 1131 the church was built by the Altaich Abbey. The discovery of the Altaich seal in a grave near a side altar (1878) confirms this assumption. The church was dedicated to the abbot of the GODEHARD monastery.

The Texingen Memorial Book says St.Gotthard is the oldest mother church in the area. There was a fountain next to the church that had medicinal water. Striking miracles at the "Holy Well" made St. Gotthard a famous place of pilgrimage. Rich sacrifices and votive offerings by the pilgrims made it possible to build the church larger and to decorate it splendidly. It was given the nickname "Golden Church".

Around 1460 the current church was built in the late Gothic style, the fountain was integrated into the interior of the church during construction. The church is equipped with a baroque high altar and two baroque side altars. In the middle of the high altar is the statue of St. Gotthard. Before the fire in 1648, the church was Gothic.
