Tom Buidhe might reach 3,140 feet (957 m) and be a Munro, but it’s more of a giant, sprawling dome. It lies in a fantastically remote setting east of the A93 and Glenshee ski Centre, which is also a decent starting point for an ascent. While you’re here, it’s easy to bag neighbouring Tolmount too, and you can add in even more Munros if you’re up for a long day.

Start options include the Cairnwell Pass by the Glenshee Ski Centre, Auchallter further north along the A93 or Glen Clova, to the east. Your choice largely depends on what other mountains you fancy bagging alongside Tom Buidhe. No matter which route you take, you’ll likely come across boggy terrain and pathless sections but there’s nothing technical on the most direct ascents.

On the summit, you’ll find a small cairn and some good views, although instant drama is muted by the domed top spreading out in all directions. Whilst the approach poses few difficulties here, only the most enthusiastic of older children may be game for the lengthy walk-in.

Best Hikes to Tom Buidhe Summit

Tips

  • Tom Buidhe is a 3,140-foot (957 m) Munro in the Scottish Highlands. It's the smallest of the six Munros that make up a natural circuit, east of the Glenshee Ski Centre. It's also the furthest point set back from the road.

  • From here, the hike back to Glenshee or the Old Military Road can take a good 2-3 hours, depending on conditions, so make sure you have enough daylight/stamina left to tackle this final Munro in the circuit.

  • Many hike here from Glenshee, however a good route also exists from Glen Doll, using Jock's Road. Following this to Tolmount before coming back around to Tom Buidhe and descending the heather to the track and retrace the outward route. Pleasant woodland and much shorter a day.
