Hikes to Mayar take you to an awesome glacial corrie, through peaceful conifer woodland and onto a gorgeous, high plateau with stunning views of the rolling Mounth scenery. Situated in the south of the Cairngorms National Park, it is a popular objective that promises varied adventures, massive views and all without the stress of technical ground.
A vast expanse of high tundra waiting to be discovered
Mayar boasts one of the most remarkable corries in the Cairngorms National Park in Corrie Fee. It is a massive, steep-sided but remarkably flat-bottomed bowl, an ideal location for a wild camp. A delightful waterfall tumbles from the crags, eventually settling as the Fee Burn and meandering into the conifer plantations beyond.
More often than not, walking routes to Mayar take in the neighbouring Munro of Driesh, such is the way these two summits are synonymous with each other. Circular routes that take you above Corie Fee are deservedly popular. Alternative approaches to Mayar from Glen Prossen to the south are also possible and wonderfully picturesque.
However you choose to approach, decent paths take you to a high grassy tundra that rewards with beautiful views. The huge expanse of the Mounth plateau unfurls before you, an astonishing sight with a dusting of snow. Lochnagar is the most spectacular single object in view, rearing up in the distant north.
Glen Clova and Glen Prossen are both home to hotels and camping options. The closest town is Kirriemuir, which offers opportunities to stock up on supplies and those all-important hill snacks.
Mountaineering skills and equipment are recommended for any attempt on Mayar in winter conditions.
Mayar - a Munro in the east of Scotland that is commonly hiked with its neighbour Driesh. A great walk from Glen Clova.

Mayar is typical of the Munros of the Mounth, its summit being rounded and fairly undistinguished. It is easily linked with neighbouring Driesh in what is a popular hike for those from the Dundee region.
However, its northern slopes fall away to Corrie Fee, a magnificent glacial bowl. This is undoubtedly the mountain's best feature, with steep sides, a picturesque waterfall and a remarkable flat bottom. Keep your eyes peeled for eagles in the skies above.

A good beginner Munro and can be walked in a circuit with Dreish.
Ascent made by Corrie Fee is well worth it, some spectacular views to be had.
